The Town of Stettler is collecting collision data from the intersection of Highway 12 and 67 Avenue from the RCMP, so the town can make a case for signals at the intersection to Alberta Transportation, council was told at their recent regular meeting.
Councillors were updated by staff on four elements of the town's strategic plan at the Tuesday, June 21 meeting. One of those issues revolved around concerns about intersections on highways 56 and 12.
Alberta Transportation (AT) had been in town to look at intersections at Highway 56 and 44 Avenue (RCMP intersection) and Highway 12 and 61 Street (ESSO intersection) to determine if creating roundabouts would resolve the traffic issues found at both sites.
However, AT contacted the town to advise it that there was not enough space to create roundabouts at the locations.
Council also heard that hospital upgrades are ongoing, with $8 million being approved to help renovate the hospital's emergency department, kitchen/cafeteria and birthing area. In the past years, the hospital has seen upgrades to its operating theatres, with new equipment and lighting installed.
The town is working with ATCO Electric to install solar lighting at West Stettler Park, provided funding goes ahead as planned. The project would see solar panels mounted atop the Stettler Recreation Centre (SRC), with the power generated there used to power lights throughout the recreation area.
The SRC's second phase continues to march along, with the town receiving grant money to complete the project. It has, after tendering, retained John Hull Architecture to draw up plans for the second part of the project.
