Temporary closures at Coronation Emergency Department

Alberta Health Services announced Thursday that the Coronation Hospital and Care Centre emergency department will be temporarily closed on Thursdays and Fridays.

According to an AHS release, the closures are due to continued gaps in clinical personnel coverage. The temporary closures will take place between 8 a.m. on Thursdays and 8 a.m. on Fridays. The ED is open Saturday to Thursday, closed Thursday, before reopening 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.

"Alberta Health Services is grateful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff, and would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding during this time," they said in a release.

In addition, the ED will be closed on the following dates and times over the next month due to gaps in coverage:

·         8 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 13

·         8 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 11

·         8 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 25

Recruitment efforts continue for additional physicians to support the community and surrounding area.

When the ED is closed, nursing staff will remain in the department to support any patients presenting to the site. Staff will assess patients and provide care where appropriate. Depending on their condition, patients may be referred to other facilities in surrounding communities, including the Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor, the Hanna Health Centre and the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre. EMS will be available to transport patients if required.

Other services at the site are not impacted by the ED closures.

If locum coverage is secured for any of the identified gaps, ED service will be restored and the community will be notified.
