The Town of Stettler played host to a pair of judges from Communities in Bloom on July 25.

Anthony O’Neil, from North Saanich, B.C., and Martin Quin, from Goderich, Ont. joined delegates from the town which showcased the best of what Stettler had to offer.

Featuring over 50 stops, the tour included presentations, drive-by mentions, stops at the town office, a walk down Main Street, a mini ghost walk, a tour of the transfer site, the Performing Arts Centre and many, many other destinations the community has to offer.

The tour was conducted in three parts: a walking a tour, a driving tour, and a horse-drawn wagon tour provided by Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions.

One requirement for Communities in Bloom judging is for one residential property to be visited. This year, the residence chosen was that of Pam and James Taylor who have a “magnificent” yard, according to Heartland Beautification chairperson Grace Fix.

According to judges comments, the yard was the nicest residence they have seen on a judging tour.

On the conclusion of the tour a banquet was held for the Judges at HUB which was attended by the Mayor, town council, administration, and Heartland Beautification members.

During the banquet, a beautification award was presented to Barry Bowie for his work at the Community Orchard and the Eco Excellence Awards were presented to Joanne Pindre and Jan and Bob Richardson for their “eco-friendly habits in daily living.”

According to Fix, the judges shared positive comments during the banquet with one commenting that the Stettler sense of community was evident “in spades” which contributed in making the community a great place to live.

As Stettler was the 2019 International champion in its population category, for the 2022 competition it is facing other champions which include Kingsville, Ont., Stonewall, Man., and Yarmouth, N.S.

The final report will be produced over the next several weeks and be released in September.

Stettler’s Heartland Beautification Committee oversaw the organization of the tour.
