Clearview Public Schools 2022-2023 budget is headed for another deficit.

Trustees reviewed the school division’s audited financial statements and projected budget for the 2022-2023 school year during the Nov. 25 board meeting.

While 2021-2022 ultimately ended up with a surplus of just under $588,000, those funds are being directed towards the $1.9 million deficit in the current school year.

The deficit spending has been part of a planned draw-down on reserves since 2010. At the time reserves were sitting just over $3.4 million; however, through the budget deficits, those reserves had been drawn down to $1.5 million by summer 2022.

Clearview’s budget for 2022-2023 is just over $37.1 million, with $150,000 anticipated for technology improvements, $250,000 for improvements in mental health supports and other strategic initiatives, and a forecast expense increase in fuel and utilities which will impact divisional transportation and building operations.

Field Trips

At long last, field trips are back in play for the students of Clearview Public Schools.

The board has approved Gus Wetter archery students to attend the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Championships in Regina, Sask, in spring 2023, as well as the World Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in June.

School council support

Clearview Public Schools trustees have decided to support school councils, and their parent volunteers, through the creation of bylaws and guiding documents to implement if they so chose.

The draft documents will be presented to the Council of School Councils in February 2023 before being formally offered to councils at the individual school level.

Trustees hope that by drafting these documents the fundraising societies and councils can be supported but still function separately, as required by Alberta legislation.
