Clearview trustees have put the finishing touches on plans for the 2018 Recognition Night.

The event is held each year as a show of appreciation to the teachers, school staff, bus drivers and custodians who’ve spent a number of years in the Clearview division.

This year it will be held on June 7 at The HUB at the Stettler Recreation Centre, after previously being held in the Stettler Community Hall for the past three years.

In 2013-14, the recognition evening was held in Castor, but the current board decided to keep this year’s event in Stettler after hearing feedback on travel times from some staff members.

Superintendent report

Superintendent Peter Barron spoke during the April 19 board meeting of his work in recent weeks. He continues to make visits to schools across the division, stopping in Donalda and the Stettler Outreach School on April 5, and a visit to some of the colony schools on April 10.

Meantime, surveys have gone out to students who wrote diploma exams in January about the challenges they faced with the tests. Thirty teachers from Clearview will attend the Alberta Teachers’ Association ‘Middle Years’ conference in Banff from April 26-28, while elementary staff met recently with a literacy expert over a two-day workshop.

Finally, Superintendent Barron shared that Clearview is working with the Wolf Creek school division on a partnership for additional supports for diploma prep and online learning.

2018-19 Clearview board meeting dates

Trustees with Clearview Public Schools have approved a meeting calendar for the remainder of 2018 and 2019.

The board approved an initial calendar shortly after the October 2017 election, but had yet to set meeting dates for beyond the end of this school year.

The calendar in principle will have an organizational meeting held at the end of August to select who will hold the title of board chair, as Ken Checkel stated last fall he would only like to hold the position for one year.

The 2018 meetings are: Aug. 29, Sept. 19, Oct. 10, Oct. 31, Nov. 14, Nov. 28 and Dec. 12. The 2019 meetings are: Jan. 16, Feb. 6, Feb. 27, March 20, April 10, May 1, May 22, June 19, Aug. 28, Sept. 18, Oct. 9, Oct. 30, Nov. 13 and Nov. 27. All meetings are 10 a.m.to 4 p.m.

It was also noted the March 20, 2019, meeting date may need to be changed as there is also a College of Alberta School Superintendents conference on that date.

The policy ensures meetings happen in November and May to approve annual budgets, and also give the board the ability to call further meetings if necessary.
