Clearview Public Schools is already looking towards the future with the development of the 2023-24 spring budget.

Directing Clearview superintendent Scot Leys to proceed with the development of the new budget during the April 19 board meeting, some areas of success from the 2022-23 budget will be built on.

Updates from the 2022-23 budget, which is being used as a foundation for the new budget, include a 10 per cent increase to the Inclusive Services budget, which allows for specialized learning support for students, a shift to $50,000 of outreach funding per site, a shift to teacher funding of a full-time-equivalent basis, not per student, and a $276,000 increase stemming from increased enrollments to be continued in 2023-24.

Also being updated for the 2023-24 budget are a new framework for school and transportation fees and a division-wide change from traditional phone systems to voice-over-internet phones during the year, although non-internet-based lines will be maintained at each school for security situations.

As part of the phone system upgrades, the schools across the division will also be having bell and paging systems replaced with compatible systems at a cost of around $30,000 to be funded from strategic initiative reserves.

Community engagement

After hosting a string of successful community engagement sessions during February and March 2023, the Clearview board of trustees is considering turning the sessions into annual events.

The data collected during the sessions are being used by divisional leaders to develop learning plans focusing on key points of the community dialogue for the 2023-24 school year.

Highlights from the community sessions indicated a need for Clearview to continue its focus on developing literacy, numeracy, mental health and wellness, and critical thinking.
