Clearview honours employees

Clearview School District honoured several retiring and long-time employees during its annual recognition night June 17 at Stettler Community Hall.

“It’s a great night to celebrate out staff and what they contribute,” said Ken Checkel, who chairs the board.

“You are special people who have achieved great milestones.”

“We need and appreciate everyone we have.”

Checkel introduced new secretary-treasurer Lewis Hill, who succeeds Peggy Keith who retired after 13 years.

Clearview honoured seven people retiring (which include brief biographies as presented) –

• Larry Oro, 39 years driving bus.

He began his driving career in Clearview in 1971and drove in the Warden area southwest of Stettler, and nine years later transferred to an area southeast of Stettler.

• Wendy Airey, 36 years at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler office and library.

She started working in the high school library in fall 1974 and moved to the school office in spring 1976.

• Susan Mohn, 35 years in division, at Stettler Middle School and Botha.

Mohn started in 1975 at Botha School where she taught for 24 years before she transferred to Stettler Middle School.

• Don Anderson, 32 years teaching at Stettler Middle School and division.

He started at Stettler Junior High School in 1981 teaching physical education and health.

After a one-year sabbatical to complete a bachelor’s degree, he returned the junior high school to teach social studies, math, science and language arts.

• Mike Roach, 19 years at Stettler Elementary School.

Roach started at Stettler Elementary School where he taught physical education and completed his teaching career in Clearview.

He coached William E. Hay Wildcats senior boys’ football team for many years.

• Angela Piffer, 18 years at Donalda Hutterite Colony School.

She started in September 1991 at the Donalda Hutterite Colony after she served at a substitute teacher in Erskine for a few years.

• Joan Goehr, 14 years as a bus driver in the Erskine area.

She was hired in Clearview in September 1996 and served in the Erskine area.

Big Valley School teacher Tara Switzer was recognized as a nominee for the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award while Sarah Steinbach of Wm E. Hay was acknowledged as the zone nominee for the Edwin Parr Award.
