Christ-King Catholic School hosts ‘Drive Thru Graduation’ for Kindergarten students

It was a perfect day for the outdoor celebration

Christ-King Catholic School hosted a Kindergarten Drive Thru Graduation on June 10th in the school parking lot.

“Today is in place of our normal Kindergarten grad,” said Tara McMillan, principal of Christ-King Catholic School.

Parents signed up their child up for a time slot to receive a grad picture, a diploma and a gift.

Also, school staff were there in a designated area to cheer on each individual student as they graduated from Kindergarten.

“It’s not exactly the same, but we are doing our best to give them the best experience that we can. It’s been beneficial for them because they are recognized for all of their work this year and it’s been great for us because we get to see them!

“Some of the kids are a little shy because they haven’t seen us for a little bit, but most are very, very excited. They also get a gift at the end so that really adds to it, too. Parents seem grateful that we are hosting something, and the (kids) also get photos with a grad hat.”

Parents indeed were pleased with how the event turned out.

“I think it’s a wonderful way that we can cap off our school year,” said Tracy Turre, a mom to one of the Kindergarten graduates and a teacher at Christ-King.

Another highlight was that Turre’s daughter, Olivia, hadn’t met her teacher Shayla Schilling in person as Schilling had just started in April - in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. So all of their communication to date had been online.

“I know my daughter was so excited to get to meet her teacher face to face, so this was an opportunity to do that,” she said.

“Olivia was so excited - she wanted to wear her fanciest dress,” she said. “It’s been an opportunity for them to really celebrate what they’ve done this year.”

Tracy said Olivia’s brother Henry was also excited to attend the special event, and he’s heading into Kindergarten this fall so the graduation was that much more meaningful as well.

“He is so excited to come to school in September, so it was nice for him to see what Kinder-grad is about.”
