Castor Winterfest royalty crowned

Castor

A Winterfest royalty coronation was held at Castor's Paintearth Lodge on Jan. 29.

Winterfest royalty made a return for the 2024 edition of the town-wide activity and saw Abby Boxma pick up the crown as the Winterfest Princess after two rounds of voting.

In the first round of voting, community members could nominate anyone from the community to be royalty for $1 per nomination. At the end of the round, the top three nominees move to the finalist round of voting.

In the finalist round, jars are placed at several locations around Castor and people can vote for their choice of royalty by voting with their wallets. Each finalist has their own jar, and whichever finalist has the most money in their jars at the end of the round is declared the winner.

Finalists for the 2025 edition of Winterfest royalty were Shawn Peach, Jenessa Dunkle, and a couple, Kevin and Lynn Sabo.

The ceremony began just after 6 p.m. with around a dozen lodge residents and community members on hand.

Lodge activities coordinator Brenda Kneller welcomed everyone to the gathering before turning things over to Winterfest organizer Diana Boxma and 2024 Winterfest Princess Abby.

Abby filled everyone in on what she had done for the previous year in her role as princess before it was time for the main event, announcing the 2025 winners.

Ultimately, Kevin and Lynn Sabo were crowned as the 2025 Winterfest king and queen, though Diana noted that the race was close.

All the funds raised from the Winterfest royalty contest go back into supporting Castor Winterfest, taking place from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

Watch for the new King and Queen to be out and about at events over the weekend.
