Castor fire department installs new memorial

In recognition of all fallen firefighters

A project over a year in the making has finally concluded at the Castor Fire Hall.

The Castor Volunteer Fire Department announced via social media that a monument for fallen firefighters has been placed on the property outside the fire hall.

"It's there as a constant reminder," said Fire Chief Patrick Kelly.

Chief Kelly is unsure if there will be an official unveiling for the monument as the department is still healing from the loss of firefighter Stephen Rayfield nearly three years ago and wants to "move on."

"It's been two and a half years and still struggling," said Kelly.

The monument is a concrete firefighter cross, with the phrase "We'll take it from here" inscribed across the bottom.

That phrase is the tagline for the #9 Make a Difference Foundation, which was started in the wake of Rayfield's death by his widow.

Kelly says that the public is welcome to come few the monument, however, people are asked to make sure that the driveways for the fire hall remain clear in case of emergency.
