Very few kids can naturally sink a jump shot like Michael Jordan and even the legend himself says mastering basketball skills comes from hours of practice and coaching.

This is where Stettler’s basketball training camp, Camp Teckla, comes in. While kids and youth who attend Camp Teckla may not come out of the three-day camp rivalling Jordan, they will likely be able to use their developed skills during the school year, says Camp Teckla Head Coach Leighann Doan-Reimer.

“We will be doing a lot of individual skill development and we definitely see a lot of improvement by the end of the camp,” said Doan-Reimer, who has over 20 years experience coaching basketball.

In its 23rd year, Camp Teckla develops basketball players from Grades 4-12.

The camp was created in memory of Teckla Anderson who played basketball in high school.

Doan-Reimer, along with Julie Siemens, who assists co-ordinating the camp, are former teammates of Anderson.

Held at Stettler Schools from July 2nd-5th, Grades 4 to 7 will attend the camp in the morning from 9 a.m. to 12-noon, with Grades 8 to 12 attending later, from 1 to 5 p.m.

“They will be getting a lot of playing time, which is a good thing,” Doan-Reimer said. “It’s an opportunity for them to try new things.”

Camp Teckla is co-ed and based around the Canada basketball curriculum.

“It’s well-researched,” Doan-Reimer said of the drills.

Siemens agrees, noting that the camp will allow kids and youth, “To hold onto the skills.”

Those attending the camp should come prepared to be active and, “Come ready to sweat,” explained Doan-Reimer. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, take notes, and ask questions.
