Big Valley waterline break causes boil water order

A boil water order remains in effect in the Village of Big Valley following a break in a waterline on Jan. 5.

“It’s all fixed now, but we will continue to have a boil-water order until we get the testing done,” said Mayor Rick Kargaard.

He expects the order will be lifted by the end of this week.

Poor road conditions with snow have delayed the village from delivering water samples to Edmonton.

Corrosion of a fitting downtown and a bolt-valve on the line near Big Valley School caused the problems which also reduced the water pressure.

“Loss of pressure was the only reason to issue a boil water order,” said Mayor Kargaard.

“We were able to control the water flow, although it was creating some ice on the streets.”

While the modern plastic waterline was installed in 1979, the fittings may not be as durable he, said.

“Waterlines won’t likely cause breaks or problems, just fittings,” said Mayor Kargaard.

“It’s in good shape.”

“We don’t anticipate any more problems, although that’s no guarantee it won’t happen again,” noted Mayor Kargaard.

“We’ll review the system in the summer.”

Students of Big Valley School were given a few days off from classes last week due to the problems in the water distribution system.
