The Bashaw Youth Centre has been awarded a $5,000 grant.
According to the acting centre director, Christine Buelow, the funds are going to be put towards emergency operations and programming at the centre.
Buelow notes that the Bashaw Youth Centre has around 120 youth who regularly take part in activities in the centre drawn from all over the Bashaw area.
Youth participating at activities at the youth centre generally run between the ages of Kindergarten and Grade 6, though a few older students do stop in as well.
At the centre, there are usually some structured activities going on, though according to Buelow there is time for kids to direct their own activities as well.
"There's multiple centres," said Buelow, in a recent interview.
Activities at the centre can vary from crafts to playing board games to learning new songs to ping pong and more.
"We try to be adaptive to what the community needs ... It's a safe space to be," said Buelow.
The Bashaw Youth Centre operates under a foundation that runs it and is a recognized federal charity, which made them eligible for the $5,000 grant from the Reed Deer Community Foundation during the summer.
Buelow notes that the majority of the centre's income comes from donations and community support.
"We've always had to fundraise," said Buelow.
"(The community) continues to support us."
The Bashaw Youth Centre has operated in the community since the early 2000s.
