Local cover rock band Loose Change took the stage for the final Wednesday in the Town of Stettler's free concert series, Entertainment in the Park, at West Stettler Park on Aug. 31.

The popular band was one of three local acts to grace the stage over the summer, with fellow local country act Domino playing the week prior, and Wheel House performing on Canada Day.

The weather cooperated for the concert, which filled the flat seating area before the park's gazebo with a good hundred people who came out to listen to their favourite rock'n'roll classics.

Despite a couple rain-outs, this year's concert series had an increased attendance, according to Lee Penner, director of parks and leisure services for the Town of Stettler. Penner has organized the series since its inception about 13 years ago, after council directed him to create a culture event in the community.

"Council wanted to make sure we didn't neglect culture," Penner said, explaining that it was easy to get caught up in the rush of sporting activities.

Local bands bring in the best crowds, so Penner tries to ensure the series is salted with local talent all summer long. This year, four local mainstays graced the park gazebo — The Jazz Guys, who opened Entertainment in the Park; Wheel House, who played on Canada Day; country darlings Domino; and closing band Loose Change.

Two new acts took to the stage this summer — Pete Christian and Lisa Heinrich, a duo who performed in late July. Brad Abel, while not living in Stettler, grew up here and was happy to return to his old stomping grounds, Penner said.

Country and classic rock are the most popular of the acts that come to town, Penner said. One year, Penner brought in a local metal act and said that it will likely be the only time, as the music didn't seem to resonate with the community.
