Stettler and area residents have two causes to choose from during Alberta Depot’s largest bottle drive.

The Great Prairie Bottle Harvest is about Albertans helping Albertans, raising money to support a variety of causes and in Stettler, residents can help the Wm. E. Hay Archery Team and Austyn Radford’s trip to Hawaii with Wm. E. Hay’s Concert Band.

Funds raised for the archery team will go towards their participation in tournaments, with the money raised subsidizing the costs of bussing and accommodations.

Austyn Radford wanted to do her own fundraising event for the school band’s Hawaii trip.

The archery team and Radford will go door-to-door on Oct. 13, 20 and 27.

Alberta Depot brought together 90 registered participants province-wide.

According to Koebel, the Great Prairie Bottle Harvest not only helps local groups but also highlights the environmental benefits of recycling. Alberta’s beverage container deposit and recycling program sees 85 per cent of all empty beverage containers purchased in Alberta returned for a refund.

“Alberta has one of the highest rates of return for beverage containers in the world,” said Lori Koebel, manager, communications and marketing, Alberta Beverage Container Recycling. “In 2017 Albertan’s achieved a return rate of over 85 per cent equating to over 2 billion containers diverted from landfill.”

Alberta’s largest bottle drive takes place Oct. 13, 20, and 27 across various Alberta communities.
