The developers of a proposed solar project southeast of Stettler hosted a well-attended open house on March 22.

Designed as a public engagement session, the open house provided an opportunity for both town and county residents to ask questions about the solar project ABO Wind Canada Ltd. wants to construct southeast of the intersection of Range Road 195 and Township Road 384, 2 kilometres directly south of where Highway 12 comes around the lake.

According to information provided at the open house, the Stettler Solar and Storage Project is a 34 megawatt construction that would “provide a cost-effective source of enough clean energy for approximately 10,000 homes.”

Once constructed, the solar project should export 25 megawatts of capacity to the Alberta electrical grid.

Around 72,000 solar panels will be mounted to a single-axis rack. An inverter-transformer station will also be constructed on site to allow the power generated be added to the grid.

Another aspect of the proposed site will be a 16 megawatt storage battery which will allow energy to be stored during periods of excess generation and discharged to the grid during periods of higher demand or lower generation.

The proposed project will tie in to the Alberta energy grid via a distribution line that will connect to a nearby, ATCO Electric-owned substation.

Current timelines for the proposed project, now that the community engagement and environmental reviews have been done, include filing at the same time the necessary County of Stettler development permit and the Alberta Utilities Commission application sometime in the second-quarter of 2023.

Should there be no issues with the permits at either level, ABO Wind Canada Ltd. hopes to begin construction in early 2024 with operations commencing towards the end of the same year.

The open house ran from 6-8:30 p.m.
