Weather advisory issued for Stettler and area

Risk of funnel cloud forming

A weather advisory has been issued for Stettler and area with a risk of funnel clouds.

Funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

According to Environment Canada, this weak rotation isn’t normally a threat near the ground but there’s a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, Environment Canada will issue a watch or warning.

Landspout tornadoes don’t usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

To report severe weather send an email to ABstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using the hashtag #ABStorm.
