A weather advisory has been issued for Stettler and area with a risk of funnel clouds.

Funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

According to Environment Canada, this weak rotation isn’t normally a threat near the ground but there’s a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, Environment Canada will issue a watch or warning.

Landspout tornadoes don’t usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.
