Successful spring rummage sale held in Castor

Semi-annual sale was complicated by a break-in

Castor's IODE held a successful rummage sale at the Community Hall on April 12, despite some setbacks.

According to IODE president Vickie Schulmeister, the semi-annual sale netted over $5,300, all of which is remaining in the community.

The spring event was complicated this time around, as when organizers arrived on the morning of the sale, they found that the community hall had been broken into and some items had been stolen.

"It was just more bedevilment, it seemed," said Schulmeister.

Items stolen included leftover juice boxes, sandwiches, blankets, pillowcases, towels, and costume jewellery, according to Schulmeister.

Due to the relatively low value of the combined items stolen, Schulmeister says they were able to file an RCMP complaint over the phone and opened the sale only around five minutes late.

While unsure how many people were through the doors, Schulmeister says that there were a large number of people lined up to come in when the sale opened at 10 a.m., and again when the bag sale opened at 1:30 p.m.

Funds raised from the sale remain in the local community. The IODE sponsors annual scholarships for local students, supports the Castor hospital, has supported the STARS air ambulance service in the past, and more recently has put funds towards a young adult working to establish a sledge hockey program in East Central Alberta.

The next rummage sale is booked for Oct. 18, 2025.
