The Heartland Beautification Committee has purchased 21 more raised beds for Stettler's three Community Gardens.
Last year, 10 were purchased for the Central Gardens and they were so popular that 10 more are being added there, as well as 6 new beds being placed at the NE Gardens and 5 at the South Gardens. They are filled with top quality soil, compost, commercial manure and perlite so produce excellent gardening results.
They are easy to maintain and comfortable to reach. Gardeners love them.
The Heartland Beautification Committee recently received a $3,000 "Green My City" grant from the Green Cities Foundation for this project.
In the past, some Community gardeners were having difficulty keeping up with their ground plots so the decision was made to move to some raised beds.
These raised beds are made from recycled plastic that comes from our area.
Chris and Travis Overacker, who were raised in Stettler, have had a recycling business in Lacombe for many years.
Recently, they decided to start "Grey is Green", a company that manufactures plastic lumber from the recycled plastic they receive. They constructed all our raised beds.
Heartland Beautification Committee members and other volunteers have filled the beds and surrounded them with mulch.
Residents can rent a raised bed for $5 for the season. About half of the beds have already been rented. Interested gardeners should register for one at the Recreation Office as soon as possible.
In addition to getting the gardens ready, members of the committee also took part in the town-wide clean up on April 25, and had a barbecue afterward.
