Another Seniors’ Week has come and gone in Castor.
There was a full week of festivities celebrating the seniors in the community; things got started with a pancake breakfast hosted by Castor’s Paintearth Lodge on June 5.
The public was invited to the breakfast, and Castor’s mayor, Richard Elhard, read a proclamation declaring Seniors’ Week in the community from June 5-9.
According to Brenda Kneller, the lodge activities coordinator, the breakfast was “well-attended.”
The next day, a group of seniors loaded onto the lodge van and headed down to the Scapa Hall for that community’s annual Strawberry Tea. The hall, according to Kneller, was full of people from Hanna and Castor both.
Also on June 6, Claude Zinger, from Coronation came to the lodge and performed music for the residents. Some extended-care residents went over for the presentation as well and everyone had ice cream treats afterward, says Kneller.
On June 7, Castor’s Gust Wetter School held a Seniors’ Appreciation Day with the assistance of Mandy Fuller from Castor and District Family and Community Support Services.
On June 8, it was time for Paintearth Lodge to invite the community back into the facility again. This time, people were invited to the lodge’s annual, and always popular, Tea and Bake Sale.
Close to 100 people showed up for the sale, with the residents and staff raising over $3,000.
Nearly $1,700 of that amount was raised at the bake table alone, the contents of which were donated by residents, staff, and community members.
Finishing off the day, the residents and staff were treated to a KFC supper.
To wind down the week, the lodge had a barbecue steak supper and a presentation by the Mennonite singers on June 9.
