Many fans of Gordon Lightfoot's music attended the tribute concert at the Stettler Performing Arts Centre on April 24.
The show, titled Picking Up the Pieces: The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot, was brought to Stettler by Second Sunset Productions.
During the performance, many songs were played from Lightfoot's catalogue, including fan favourites such as Alberta Bound, If You Could Read My Mind, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Carefree Highway, and many more.
Lead singer Benjamin Williams enjoyed the Stettler performance.
"It's my first time performing in Stettler, and it's a beautiful town. The theatre we were playing in is gorgeous and is very retro-looking. I hope to come back," he said.
When it came to playing classic music, Williams was inspired by it as he grew up listening to it.
"On car trips with my Mom and Dad, we used to have these mix CDs that played in the car that had a bunch of classic rock and folk music. So I grew up listening to Cat Stevens, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, and that type of thing. I have always had an affinity for it."
From the songs performed at the show in Stettler, choosing a favourite is hard, Williams said.
"I would have to say it is a tossup between Canadian Railroad Trilogy because of how majestic and emphatic it is, and probably If You Could Read My Mind because that is a song that has touched a lot of our hearts individually, and even if you are not familiar with Lightfoot people tend to know that song."
Second Sunset Productions began the Picking Up the Pieces: The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot show on March 31 in Lethbridge.
Throughout the month of April, the group then went on to play in Athabasca, Grand Prairie, Airdrie, Okotoks, Red Deer, Stetter, and Hinton.
The group will be back performing the Lightfoot show in Okotoks on June 5.
