Clearview Public Schools has announced the launch of Heartland Academy, a new learning initiative designed to offer career-focused education for high school students.
The program opens its doors in July and will offer high school-age students the opportunity to earn credits while taking part in hands-on learning opportunities, such as through the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), Green Certificate, dual credit programs, work experience, and other options.
"Heartland Academy is about meeting students where they’re at and giving them meaningful, real-world options to support their learning journey,” said Jason Faber, Principal of Heartland Academy, in a release announcing the program. “We’re creating space for students to explore career interests, gain certifications, and earn credits. All in a way that fits their life and schedule.”
While the program is supported by Clearview Public Schools. it is designed to support learners both within and outside of Clearview's borders, "making it an attractive option for students who are working, pursuing specialized credentials, or whose needs don't align with traditional school calendars."
Heartland Academy will be led by principal Jason Faber, supported by administrator Lori Eno. Educators Amanda Hawkins and Karen Belland will support student learning, and Candace Maruk will assist with work experience placements, career pathways, and post-secondary partnerships.
Clearview is not going it alone; the school division has partnered with Olds College and Red Deer Polytechnic to offer dual credit programs to students in different areas, like health care, meat processing, and more.
Kicking things off in the summer of 2025 will be the Work Experience program, which will give students the chance to earn up to 10 credits towards graduation just for working their summer jobs.
"Students don’t have to choose between school and work,” said Maruk. “At Heartland Academy, work is learning. We’re here to help students get credit for the skills they’re already building.”
Enrolment for Heartland Academy is open to all Alberta high school students, Clearview students or not, and registration can be completed online through the Clearview Public Schools website at Clearview.ab.ca/heartlandacademy.
Planning for the future, Heartland Academy could grow to include home-schooled students and those who need aid with core academic programming, with more flexible timelines as the program subsequently expands.
