Local Peavey Mart Manager Matt Dorsett has stepped back into the role of president of the Stettler Regional Board of Trade (SRBOT) after an unexpected vacancy.

Outgoing president Matt Wall was elected by the board in February during its annual general meeting (AGM), but recently stepped down after he received a job transfer that meant moving out of town.

Wall was the branch manager of the local Scotiabank.

Dorsett had served as vice president and no other board members put their name forward for the position so he was the natural successor. Dorsett previously served as the board’s president for two consecutive years, the maximum allowed.

“The board was happy with me transitioning back into that role,” said Dorsett.

“I’m excited to be back in the role as president,” he said, adding that the board and staff are “fantastic to deal with.”

Dave Goodwin has now moved up from board member to vice president.

The only other board change since the AGM last February is Lisa Joy, Editor of the Stettler Independent, was nominated and voted in as a Director.

Dorsett has been with Peavy Mart for 13 years and has been the manager of the Stettler Peavey Mart for six-and-a-half years and says he feels fortunate to operate a business in this town.

Any business within Stetter with an active business license has an automatic membership in the SRBOT.

The purpose of the board is to foster economic, civic and social growth and to promote trade, commerce and tourism throughout the Stettler region, according to their website www.stettlerboardoftrade.com.

The SRBOT has been doing well in the past couple of years, with monthly meetings well-attended and past trade shows well-received, says Dorsett.

“We have a great board right now, a great mix of people in the community representing us, we have excellent support from the Town of Stettler,” he said.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the round table event that was planned for mainstreet this month, Taste of the Heartland, was cancelled, said Dorsett.

It will be up to the committee for that event to decide if it will take place next year or not, he said.

The board is adjourned for July and August, but meetings will resume in September, according to Dorsett.

“We’re looking forward to another great year.”

Events coming up in the fall include the fifth annual Pheasant Festival from Oct. 12 to 14, and the Stettler business and citizenship awards gala on Oct. 25.

The festival is a hunting and conservation awareness event and is popular with out-of-towners and visitors, says Dorsett.
