Business owners in Stettler elected their new Board of Directors during the Stettler Regional Board of Trade’s Annual General Meeting this month.

“We’re really excited to get going” says Executive Director Stacey Benjamin. “We haven’t had a lot of changes to the board, so we’re continuing on and everybody is very eager going into the year ahead.”

Matt Wall, who also serves as the Branch Manager of the local Scotiabank, was chosen to serve once again as President at the AGM held on Tuesday, Feb. 13. This is Wall’s second year at the helm of the Executive, after taking over the position from Vice President Matt Dorsett, who is the Store Manager of the local Peavy Mart.

In addition to Wall and Dorsett, all but one of the Directors were elected to serve again in 2018. Ryan McNeil of ATB is new this year, as Sherry Marshall of TD Canada Trust no longer sits on the board.

Returning members are made up of Kurt Baker (WISH Kitchen & Gift), Brenda Barritt (Stettler Learning Centre), Dave Goodwin (Dave’s Wood Working), Brandi Page (Canalta Hotel), Don Parsons (DPC Consulting), Ashley Pearson (ATB), Chris Raab (ATB), Rebecca Strause (Scotiabank) and Justin Tanner (Gitzel & Company).

Stacey Benjamin feels the board consists of a strong set of individuals with a good representation of the business community, but “as always to other business owners in town, feel free to stop by the office or speak with one of our Directors if you have any questions.”

Also sitting on the Board are what’s known as ex-officio members. They consist of Stettler Mayor Sean Nolls, as well as Town Councillors Gord Lawlor and Scott Pfeiffer, with Councillor Wayne Smith serving as an alternate. Smith replaces Al Campbell as an alternate, while Anne Muhlbach is no longer listed as a representative from the Village of Big Valley.

Looking ahead to what’s happening later this year, Stacey Benjamin says, “The Trade Show is our next big event coming up in April, and then we also have our administrative lunch. We also help out a bit with the Steel Wheel Stampede providing secretarial services, but then our next big event will be the ‘Taste of the Heartland’ in July.”

“The Board of Trade has also been doing a lot with business retention strategies, offering some learning programs and workshops. We do have an upcoming customer service workshop that will be taking place at the beginning of May.”

Finally, Benjamin points out, “Economic development is always at the forefront. An economic development plan is something the Town of Stettler has laid out in their strategic planning this year, so we look forward to helping out there as much as we can.”

Any businesses with an active license with the Town of Stettler is given an automatic membership in the Stettler Regional Board of Trade, which allows them to vote for the annual Board of Directors.
