The Prairie Sons are Godwin Friesen and David Liam Roberts.

Stettler residents will be in for a taste of classical music with Stettler Showcase's latest offering.

The Prairie Sons will be coming into town for two performances at the Stettler Performing Arts Centre on Feb. 23 with shows at 1:30 and 7 p.m.

David Liam Roberts, one half of the duo, says that "Classical music has a stereotype of being stuffy" but wants to assure potential audience members that it isn't the case.

"Our program, our recital, has something for everyone," said Roberts. "We're not just playing the classics."

The Prairie Sons consist of Roberts and Godwin Friesen, a pair of fast friends since their days at the Royal Conservatory.

Roberts is a cellist and Friesen is a pianist. The duo will be performing a show entitled "Love Letter to the Prairies."

"We have a strong connection to the prairies," said Friesen, in a recent interview.

Roberts is from Winnipeg and Friesen spent time growing up in both Saskatoon and Winnipeg, though they both live elsewhere now.

Despite living apart, the pair finds time to tour together; they toured through Alberta in the fall of 2024 and are back in the province for a 30-day tour beginning Feb. 20.

Friesen notes that while they do play the classics, they also play some covers of newer music which they have put their "personal touch" to from artists such as Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

"Everyone will hear something that they recognize," said Roberts.

The Stettler shows will consist of two roughly 40-minute sets with a brief intermission in between.

Friesen noted that "although we enjoyed a spontaneous time of sledding" due to a significant snowfall during their previous tour, "We were sad that it also meant the cancelling of two of our concerts, so please, some snow, maybe for sledding, but not so much that any concerts get cancelled this time."

Tickets for the Feb. 23 show are available at stettlershowcase.com.
