Skaters snatch Mr. Armstrong’s turkeys

Francis and Leona Nicoll were honoured as male and female citizens of the year as the Stettler and District Chamber of Commerce hosted it annual awards night. The Nicolls celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this fall.

• Pfeiffer House of Music was named business of the year by the chamber of commerce.

1989 – 20 YEARS AGO

• Kay Dunford was honoured as female citizen of the year and Bob Stewart as male citizen of the year as both were cited for their dedication, support and commitment to the Stettler community.

• The history book Botha Memories has been launched and is now on sale in Stettler at Info-Edge and Thirsk’s Salon.

1979 – 30 YEARS AGO

• R.N. Spiece and Oliver O’Hara of Stettler, both former members of the Calgary Tank Regiment, have been nominated to attend the “Amsterdam Salutes Canada” project in Holland in May 1980. The mayor of Amsterdam is inviting 35 Canadian veterans to help celebrate the 35th anniversary of that city’s liberation.

• Town of Stettler has agreed to enter into an agreement in which Stettler Municipal Hospital Complex and Stettler Ambulance Association would provide 24-hour-a-day answering service and 12 pagers to the fire department at a cost of $750 per month.

1969 – 40 YEARS AGO

• Congratulations to Linda Mohn who was crowned queen of the Endmoor Elks Carnival. Last year’s queen Carol Hausher had the honour to crown the new queen.

• McTaggart Motors celebrated its 50th anniversary as a General Motors dealer by putting dramatics additions on its big building at the north end of Main Street in Stettler. Additions will give much new display space as well as service and repair bays.

1959 – 50 YEARS AGO

• A display of paintings by Percy L. Baugh in the window of Corner Bakery is attracting much attention. Mr. Baugh, who reads by braille has placed more than 200 of his beautiful Alberta scenes in local homes and throughout the province.

• A contract has been awarded to G.H. Roberts Construction of Stettler to construct a post office building in Big Valley and will contain a night lobby with lock boxes, a public lobby, mail lobby and working space.

1949 – 60 YEARS AGO

• D. J.M Malcolm was re-elected for a second term as president of Stettler branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. IN his acceptance speech, Dr. Malcolm urged members to get behind the proposed Legion Memorial Hall.

• There are two great searches going on in Stettler – the search for oil and the search for rooms and suites. As more holes are punched into the ground, living accommodations become more scarce.

1939 – 70 YEARS AGO

• Skating at Armstrong’s slough is now forbidden after 9 p.m. A small gang of bird-snatchers, while pretending to skate, actually had designs on Mr. Armstrong’s flock of turkeys and some of his birds have gone missing.

• The Stettler Independent will publish a shopping edition on Dec. 12 with 12 pages for the benefit of shoppers who will visit Stettler during the 10 days before Christmas. Business streets will be illuminated by coloured lights and the stores will be decorated.

1929 – 80 YEARS AGO

• At a meeting of the Endiang Athletic Club, it was decided to make a rink just north of the track where it can be easily flooded from Carl Boehlke’s well. So save all your old brooms for broomball.

• Fenn News – A lantern slide lecture was given at Aunger School under the auspices of the United Church. Two sets of slides were shown – Robert Louis Stevenson and Alice in Wonderland, with lectures by Mr. Kemp and Mr. Hall.

1919 – 90 YEARS AGO

• The annual poultry show will be held in Stettler in January as preparations are being made to accommodate hundreds of birds. The show ill be open to the world, and it is expected that there will be several entries of prize birds from the provincial poultry show recently held in Calgary.

• Town of Stettler notice – Any person or persons knowing of any cases of destitution in the town are requested to notify the undersigned. By order of the town council. E. Roberts, secretary-treasurer.

1909 – 100 YEARS AGO

• Stock ranchers from the south on their annual round-up are making Erskine their final headquarters. They report having rounded up over 12,000 head of cattle this fall.

• For a man, “good-bye” signifies the end of a conversation and the moment of departure. For a women, it is the beginning of a long chapter– just as they are taking leave of each other, she thinks of the most important topics.
