Winners in Legion contests awarded

Halkirk Elks held their annual seafood night this past weekend; this year they had hypnotist Sebastian Steele entertaining the full hall.

HALKIRK HERALD -- Halkirk Elks held their annual seafood night this past weekend; this year they had hypnotist Sebastian Steele entertaining the full hall. Gus Wetter graduating class helped with the supper, receiving a donation for their efforts. Later in the evening there was a silent auction and 50/50 draw.

Mr. Lynn Holloway and Mr. Ken Jackson, representing the Castor Legion were at the school presenting cheques to the winners of this year's poster, essay and poetry contest. Winners in the K to Grade 3 class for B & W poster were 1st Aspen Johnson, 2nd Addison Charbonneau; Grades 4 to 6 B&W poster - 1st Megan Grice, 2nd Tayah Perry; Grades 4 to 6 Essay - 1st Megan Grice; Grades 4 to 6 Color poster - Toryn Johnson; Grades 7 to 9 B & W poster - 1st Bailey Musgrove, 2nd Emily Ross; Grades 7 to 9 Color poster - 1st Devon Johnson, 2nd Abby Musgrove. Congratulations for a job well done! Several of our entries have moved on to the next level.

Ten jr. high students along with teacher Mr. Mike Courtney and parent chaperones Mrs. Alison Schauer, Mrs. Cynthia Perry and Mrs. Erica Grice enjoyed two days of skiing at Lake Louise. Snow conditions were great and a good time was had by all; can't wait till next year.

The community is invited to attend a public meeting at Mother Teresa Halkirk School on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. to discuss the pending closure of the school and the transfer of all students to the Theresetta school, effective August of 2016. Please lend your support to the school parents and students during this difficult time.

Jan and Rose Koenraadt along with Dennis and Katie Turre and another couple from Blackhawks returned from a two- week vacation in the Cancun region of Mexico.

The curling team of Lee and Dan Fowler, Lyle Webber and Scott Koenraadt were among the curling teams that played in Byemoor last weekend. The team placed second in the A event.

Coming events – Feb. 11 – Seniors' floor curling, Valentine's Day bonspiel – coffee's on; Feb. 15 – Everyone welcome to join the Family Day fun time at the community hall – 12 noon till 3 p.m. - bring a box, any size, and participate in games, crafts and eating; Feb. 18 – community meeting at the Mother Teresa School - 6 p.m.; Feb. 29 – last day to get your phone number on the Elks' new phone list – check at the post office.
