“Well done” for culinary awards

The band students returned from their trip to New York on May 11. Stettler sent 86 students to New York and the surrounding area for six days for the Heritage Festival. The students and the chaperones were very busy during the event and had a great time.

As for the festival itself, it was a great experience for our students. Some of the students in the band also performed in the Gracenotes Choir. The choir brought home Gold and Andrea Benoit won the Maestro Award for her solo. Yet again, the youth of Stettler have represented themselves, the school and the community very well. Good job, Stettler.

The 18th provincial skills competition ran from Tuesday, May 11 to Thursday, May 13, and Stettler sent a group of students to compete. Jessica Skaley competed in the esthetic category while Jeanine Foot and Sara Detlor competed in hairstyling. Olha Lomeland was in the culinary arts and Jessica Zoller competed in baking. The students worked hard and learned quite a lot over the two days of the competition, and they also showed off many of the skills they had learned in school. In the end, Jessica Zoller received the bronze medal in baking – a huge accomplishment and we would like to give her a much deserved recognition. The supervising teachers, Mrs. Schlarbaum and Mr. Huo were very proud of their accomplishments.

“An Evening of One-Act Plays” will be held by the theatre arts class in the Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, May 19. There will be three student-directed shows presented, including our award winning festival piece, “The Brute” by Anton Chekhov.

Andrea from the Stettler Relay for Life was at our school on Tuesday, May 18 promoting volunteer opportunities for Wm. E. Hay students.

Parents and students will be busy at the arena this weekend in preparation for the 2010 Grad Ceremonies on Saturday, May 29. After the long weekend, our grads will begin rehearsals for the event in the Stettler Recreation Center. This year, the style of grad will be based around a Roman Theme and the main theme is “Carpe Diem” which means “seize the day”.

Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

Stay tuned next week for more news from Wm. E. Hay.
