Weekend in Big Valley promises to be full of fun, especially for model railway fans

We have another busy, event filled weekend to look forward to here in our little village: First, on Friday, Aug. 13, Big Valley is happy to present the second annual “Rocking by the Rails”. Taking place at the Big Valley Amphitheater on Railway Avenue, this event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and features music and singing by “Jemset”, guest speaker, Pastor Dwayne Ibsen and a beef on a bun supper.

The Big Valley Night Golf will be taking place on Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Big Valley Golf Club. Registration is at 9:30 p.m. with tee-off at 10 p.m. Come on out, bring your golf cart and join us for some fun. For more information, call Dan Houle at 403-876-2558.

This Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15, model railway enthusiasts will be taking over the Big Valley Agriplex for another Free-mo Model Rail Modular Exhibit. Regarded as one of the largest model train layouts of its type, this annual event attracts models and their owners from all over western Canada. Since the first successful show in 2004, word has spread and the Alberta Free-mo has continued to grow, attracting more participants and visitors each year. Past attendees include modules from the Calgary Free-mo, Battle River Railway Modelers, Chilliwack Model Railroad Club, Red Deer Free-mo, Cariboo Free-mo and Swift Current.

The “Free-mo” style represents model railways which are built separately, but can be put together in a giant operating layout. Modelers are usually impressed with the public interest in this style of model railroading and visitors are always treated to meticulously detailed displays which spread out across the entire Agriplex. It is definitely worth the effort to see these displays and watch these remarkable trains run.

We encourage everyone to pack up the family and come on out to Big Valley for what promises to be another fun weekend. Hope to see you here!
