We must be still in winter as we are not in the month of July

This strange Alberta weather is certainly dominating conversations lately. The long weekend had its share of cold, windy and miserable weather. The following Thursday and Friday saw rain and on Saturday morning everyone woke up to a thick blanket of heavy wet snow, with snow falling most of the day. It has been said Canada only has two seasons, winter and July. Since it’s not July, it must still be winter.

The Green family of Byemoor is celebrating the 100th anniversary of their family farm on Saturday, June 5 from 3 to 11 p.m. at Dale and Dee Green’s farm yard. A supper will be served from 5 – 7 p.m. with entertainment and the evening will conclude with fireworks. The Greens invite neighbours and friends to join them in the celebration, just bring along your lawn chairs.

Seniors’ Week is coming up and to mark the occasion the County of Stettler will be providing a fruit tray on Thursday, June 10 at the Endmoor Drop-in Centre for the coffee party which runs from 2 to 4 p.m. All seniors of the area are most welcome to attend.

Conditions are too wet for the plows that are installing the rural water lines so installation has been suspended until conditions dry up some.

Several folks from our district attended the graduation ceremonies at the J.C. Charyk High School in Hanna on May 21. This was the first time in many years there were no local students graduating in Hanna, however, there were several local families who had relatives graduating. The Stulberg, Boehlke, Buchwitz, Gutsche, Keith and Schultz families attended for Larren Blake, Tye Boehlke, Jared Dewald, Candace Gutsche, Clint Mohl and Kyle Mohl. Congratulations to all the graduates.

Ken and Eleanor Schultz hosted their annual long weekend campout at their farm with about 10 units of hardy campers taking part.

The local 4-H members were busy with their show and sale in Stettler on Monday and Tuesday. Congratulations to the members on their achievements and a successful sale.

Velma (nee Boehlke) Gore of Westbank, B.C. arrived in our district Wednesday to spend some time visiting among her relatives here.

On Thursday evening there was a farewell supper for the Byemoor grade nine class, their family and guests at the Byemoor hall. Heading off to high school next fall are Cody Keith, Tristan van Zandbergen and Spencer Van Heck. Good luck in high school!

Several students from our area were among the graduates of Wm. E. Hay High School in Stettler on Saturday. Congratulations to Nicole Ainsworth, Jordanna Christie, Caitlyn Keith, Ty Paulsen, Lorisa Schilling, Bonnie Somerville, Matt Tateson, Cora van Zandbergen and Justin Walker. We wish you all the very best with all your future endeavours.

Anita Mappin attended a 4-H conference in Ottawa last week. Shalene Grover drove the school bus in her absence.

Ken and Eleanor Schultz were fishing at Blood Indian last week, and report a successful catch.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Roy Nelson who passed away at the age of 86 years. Roy was the youngest of four children born to Endiang pioneers Billy and Clara Nelson. He and Verna (nee Groat) were married in 1944 and they raised a family of five sons, Brian, Doug, Rob, Steven and Ross. The funeral service was held in Stettler on Friday. Our thoughts are with his wife of 65 years, Verna and family in their time of loss.

Congratulations from the community to Bryce and Verna Mailer on the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday in Stettler. The Mailers were one-time residents of the Hackett area and now are living in Stettler. We wish this fine couple many more happy anniversaries.
