Volunteers to celebrate Earth Week by cleaning up Stettler

The Heartland Beautification Committee is looking for volunteers to help clean up Stettler at the end of April.

The annual event takes place April 26 at 9 a.m., and organizer Karen Sernecky hopes to get enough volunteers that the cleanup will only take a few hours.

“It just kind of saves our parks and leisure people from having to do all the work,” Sernecky said. “And then they can get going on sports park cleanup a little sooner.”

Individuals or groups can sign up, and can either pick a section of town they want to clean up or be assigned one.

“There’s a lot of garbage that tends to brew up,” Sernecky said. “We like our town to be pretty and not full of garbage.”

She added that the spring cleanup provides a reason for people to get out and get involved in the community.

“After enough years of doing this, maybe people will stop throwing their garbage on the ground,” Sernecky said.

The cleanup coincides with Earth Week every year. This year, Sernecky is hoping to get a group or business to donate hot dogs and pop as a thank you for the volunteers.

“We can kind of have a point to rally to,” she said.

The town also runs a program where people can get rid of their old belongings every spring, and the two events frequently get mixed up.

Any garbage bags that volunteers fill should be tied off and left on the ground, and the parks and leisure department will gather and dispose of them.
