Did you know that 80 per cent of jobs are never advertised? They are considered part of the “hidden” job market. So if you are only checking the classified ads for work you may be missing a lot of possible employment opportunities.

Why are these jobs not advertised? Well, ads can be costly and many employers may not want the flood of applications that result from an ad. Also, many employers choose to advertise by word of mouth—they let their employees know they need someone. Who is going to refer someone to their worksite that they don’t want to work with?

Employers are also impressed by job seekers who come to them—it shows initiative and motivation, qualities employers want. It also puts a face to a resume.

Many employers advertise jobs only on their company websites or Facebook, and other such sites so potential employees may need to go on-line to look for career and job opportunities.

Many employers choose to use job banks to advertise as they have access to a pool of unlimited employees with skills from all over the area, province, or country.

Some employers do not openly advertise as they do not wish other businesses to know their plans. Sometimes they advertise using a generic job description or post box number to prevent identification.

With a large selection of employees to draw on these days employers are in control and it is up to job seekers to find them. How? Read the paper carefully—jobs may be listed in other sections or the articles may show upcoming projects that will require employees. Spread the word and let others know you are seeking work—it never hurts to have help looking. Talk to former employers as perhaps they know of someone who is hiring. Target places you would like to work. Always follow up. There may not be an opening when you apply but that can quickly change. Keep your resume updated and ensure employers have a current copy. Many employers only keep a resume for three months. Above all, don’t give up. Seeking work is a full-time job and being creative in how you search can create more opportunities.
