Summertime…and the reading is easy

Library corner for the week of July 13, 2023

Ah…Summer! Time to get outdoors and enjoy the warmth, sunshine, and blossoms of the season.

Whether you’re taking a break from sweating in the garden or out camping in Alberta’s natural paradise, these are perfect days for sitting in the shade, sipping a cool drink and of course, reading a book! Or listening to an audiobook while in the tractor, at the beach, picking berries, or on a road trip.

Step into our cool library to escape the heat for a quiet reading retreat, or come in for a quick visit to stock up on your summer reading and entertainment before you leave for vacation. Besides our huge collection of fun summer reads and audiobooks, we have books and DVDs on gardening, travel, farming, and home renovations. Memberships are free to the Town of Stettler and County residents, so sign up today!

Children:

Check it Out! our summer reading program (SRP) has launched with a bang this week! We have nearly 170 youngsters registered for all the crafts, games, and loads of fun activities we’ve got going. During the week, our summer students, Jaden, Keyanna, and Zoe are hard at work running herd on the Sunshine Squad (kids 5-8 years old) and the Curiosity Crew (ages 9 and up). It’s never too late to sign up.

Summer weather offers so much freedom and fun and this week is no exception. Get set to get wet with our annual family Water Fight at the Stettler Spray Park on Fri, July 14 at 1 p.m. Prepare for this wild and crazy outing by bringing your water guns, squirt bottles, and swimsuit for a fabulous afternoon of cool refreshment.

One of the most popular events of SRP is Cooking Club on Wednesday afternoons. Next week, July 19, at 3 p.m. we’ll be mixing up our own homemade lemonade and poutine. Be sure to register early as spaces fill up fast.

Read and Rhyme carries on throughout the summer for ages 0-5 years. Parents, bring your little ones Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings at 10:30 for a morning of songs, rhymes, stories and a bit of socialization. On Fridays, we’ll be partnering with the Family Resource Network for some extra-special activities.

Adults:

Upcycle those used CDs and DVDs by creating a set of beautiful stencilled coasters at Crystal’s Crafting Club on Thu, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. Please pre-register, as spaces are limited.

Through the months of July and August, we’ll be hosting Minds in Motion Lite (minus the workout) on Thursdays at 1 p.m. If you or someone you know are noticing some cognitive decline join us for activities that stimulate the mind, games, and snacks in a relaxed social setting.

Al-Anon is a support group for those whose lives are affected by the over-consumption of alcohol by someone close to them. We meet Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and welcome anyone who might benefit from encouragement and help.

Get creative at Afternoon Friends when we will be making buttons to show off on our jackets or bags on Tue, July 18 at 1 p.m. All adults are welcome.

Relax in the privacy of your own home with a session of Yoga Nidra via Zoom on Thu, July 20, at 8 p.m. Call us for the link. It’s so relaxing that you just might fall asleep!

There’s still time to get a copy of Mexican Gothic, this month’s Reader’s Circle Book Club selection. This novel, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, is a post-war Gothic set in the Mexican countryside. Reader’s Circle will meet on Tue, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss it.
