Learning to read – Kindergarten and Grade 1 students created an excellent environment of cooperation last week which allowed the younger ones to get a taste of the joy of learning how to read.

The Grade 4/5 book club is busy with their annual swap and sale of books.

Students brought in old books from home, and were able to swap them for new ones on Monday and Tuesday. Students were able to purchase books for a quarter in Wednesday through Friday.

Just before the melting of the snow, the Grade 2 students were invited to visit the Smith family igloo. They make their igloo from an ice box builder and it is large enough to hold an entire Grade 2 class (including the teacher!)... we know because we all went in at the same time! It was lots of fun and now when we study the Inuit culture in Social Studies, we will know what it was like to live in a real igloo! Thanks Smith family!

While learning about sequencing in stories, Mrs. Sylvester’s class became illustrators for the story “The Snowman”. When they were finished with their individual stories, the Grade 1 class was then able to read them to Mrs. Thorne’s kindergarten class. This was an exciting time to show the students in kindergarten just how much they will learn next year in Grade 1 - learning to read. Mrs. Thorne then treated both classes to her own snowman story.

The Grade 4 classes are spearheading an effort to raise money to help the people of Haiti, which was devastated by the earthquake this week. We will donate all the money from our weekly recycling for January and the first two weeks of February towards a donation to the Red Cross. We asked all the classes to join them by donating their milk cartons to the cause.
