Stettler district farmer shot, RCMP have three suspects - A Look Back

2001 - 10 YEARS AGO

• With foot-and-mouth disease quickly spreading through Europe, Canadian officials are trying to prevent it coming into this country. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has prohibited the import of susceptible animals and animal products from the EU and Argentina. Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency have increased surveillance of passengers and baggage arriving from international flights.

• Agricore has decided to close its grain elevator in Bashaw this summer. However that does not mean it will be torn down before the end of the year.

1991 - 20 YEARS AGO

• Stettler’s Halley Strandquist heard her name echo through the stadium at Rodeo Royal in Calgary, as the announcer declared her to be this year’s Calgary Stampede Queen. During the stampede she’ll be expected to make 15 appearances a day, always wearing a smile.

• It’s taken nearly five years of bureaucratic ping-pong, but Stettler’s newest lodge for senior citizen’s is finally under way. While the 30-unit ledge won’t be ready until next spring, there is already a search going on for a name for the building.

1981 - 30 YEARS AGO

• Donalda and District Museum Society recently hosted a visit by 47 travel industry people from across Canada, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The reason for scheduling Donalda on their tour was to view the Lawson Lamp Collection.

• The 45 young skaters of the Alix Figure Skating Club presented “Holiday Land” to an appreciative audience last week. The seniors displayed skill and confidence, while the beginners, as always, stole people’s hearts.

1971 - 40 YEARS AGO

• A good crowd attended the Sunday snowmobile races, and out of 83 entries, the highlight of the day was the show put on by 17 modified machines, some of which are capable of traveling 100 miles an hour. Ila Lunevich, our top lady driver, again swept the powder puff classes.

• Each spring the fishermen tote away their shacks from the ice of Buffalo Lake. They leave behind food remnants, tin cans, fish carcasses and paper, all of which eventually disappears into the water, to be washed up on the shores for summer enjoyment.

1961 - 50 YEARS AGO

• The curling Kroegers: Henry, Tom, Brian and Debby (oops, we meant Dr. Frank Galbraith), are the champions of Stettler Curling Club. They defeated the Al Chanin rink to take the honour.

• Well, the Big Valley beard contest is over, and Allan Ward was declared the winner. Now the little tots can venture out without fear of encountering the “man with the beard.”

1951 - 60 YEARS AGO

• Donalda has stories to tell of hardships and inconveniences endured during the recent snowstorm. Many citizens found themselves snowbound away from home; Jim Jones was snowed in at Arrow Drilling Rig on his wedding day. An eight pound baby girl came into the world at the Clifton Clement home, even though two snow ploughs spent hours trying to open the road to the hospital. It is expected there will be flooding along the creek valley as the snow melts.

1941 - 70 YEARS AGO

• On Saturday night four hockey games were reported over the radio, which makes a record for Alberta radio fans. The Toronto-Boston game was won by Boston, which ties up the series 3-3.

• Over in the bush country near Alix, rhubarb is showing above the ground, and some farmers are planning to be in the field within two weeks.

1931 - 80 YEARS AGO

• Tuesday, April 7, Gadsby will have attained its 21st birthday, and we hear the genial members of Town Council are planning an event to fittingly celebrate this important event.

• A farmer north of town reported the arrival of meadowlarks and bluebirds last week, and robins have been spotted even earlier.

1921 - 90 YEARS AGO

• At the monthly Board of Trade meeting, Dr. Staples spoke in length in regard to a suitable site to start a summer resort near Boss Hill. This matter was discussed, as well as the matter of more development at Rochon Sands.

• Two Stettler rinks went to Castor to play for the Independent Cup, but were unable to bring it back with them, finishing five points down.

1911 - 100 YEARS AGO

• William Lennox, a well-known farmer of the Stettler district was shot on the night of March 23, as he sat with friends in the dining room of his home. The mounted police have three suspects under arrest, and it is expected that the next 12 hours will disclose some startling developments in the murder.

• The Alberta Produce Co. Ltd. expects to start the creamery going in a few days. J.B. Beckett, butter maker from Red Deer is here, and the only thing the company is waiting on now is for the cream to come in.
