Stettler 4-H rodeo and horse club awaits new members

By Kayla Myshaniuk

We are a new 4-H light horse club in Stettler. At our first meeting on Halloween day, we carved pumpkins, learned about proper saddle fit and had some riding practise.

For our first field trip, we went to the farm fair in Edmonton on Sunday, Nov. 7, where we saw Craig Cameron, a world renowned horse trainer from Texas.

He had two two-hour clinics on bitting a horse and the importance of proper rider position. We also watched a hoof and bone structure clinic by Ian Zoerb, an Alberta farrier specialist.

In between clinics, we attended a trade show and exhibits about where our food comes from. We were able to milk a cow, see where eggs come from, the different cuts from cows and pigs as well as what we should and shouldn’t feed a horse.

Our next meeting, which is held at the Stettler Agriplex, will be on Sunday Nov. 28 from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Anyone that wishes to join please call Laurie Myshaniuk @ 403-742-2699.

Students wishing to join are not required to own a horse.
