Sport stacking techniques perfected all last week

As part of their science unit on classroom chemistry, Mrs. Fox’s Grade 5 students have been examining the solubility of various household powders such as baking soda, cornstarch, salt, and sugar.

A meaningful donation – Grade-2 student Hannah Duncan went for her first “real” haircut and wanted to donate her 14-inch ponytail to make a wig for someone recovering from cancer treatment. It was all Hannah’s idea and Hannah is excited that her hair will be used to help someone she does not. know.

As part of their science unit on classroom chemistry, Mrs. Fox’s Grade 5 students have been examining the solubility of various household powders such as baking soda, cornstarch, salt, and sugar. Students have been really excited to determine which powders will make solutions and which will make suspensions. They have also been learning about the unique properties of water. Everyone was amazed to see that we could float and steel tack on the surface of water.

Stettler Elementary’s Sport Stacking Club met again this past Monday, and after more practice perfecting their technique, many of the students received the chance to time themselves doing the 3-3-3 stack. Our new champion is Jordyne Wolkowski, doing the 12 different moves perfectly in only 5.34 seconds. Great job, Jordyne!

Are you thinking, “We didn’t sport stack when I was a kid!” Well, sport stacking began in California in the 1980s but didn’t gain much attention until it was seen on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” in the early 1990s.

Phys. ed. teacher Bob Fox, started traveling around the US, teaching other teachers how to use sport stacking in their programs.

By 2007, there were over 20,000 schools using it, and the numbers continue to grow around the world.

One of the reasons it is popular with both parents and teachers is that very little equipment or space is required, so it is a sport that can be done anywhere.

Most of our Grade 5 students joined the Grade 5 Science Fair Club at the beginning of December. They are busily preparing their science fair project for the Grade 5 SES Science Fair, which will be held from 1 - 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19. The public is welcome to come and see these displays. The top eight projects will be chosen to enter the grade 5/6 Central Alberta Regional Science Fair, which is held at the Bower Place Shopping Centre in Red Deer on March 27 and 28.

Through our Grade 4 recycling program, the Stettler elementary students and staff have donated $1000 to the Canadian Red Cross. It is our wish to help the Haitian people in their time of need.

On Thursday, Jan. 28. Stettler Elementary School had a Jersey Day.

Students and staff were allowed to wear their favourite jerseys and these included a wide range including hockey, basketball, referee, Boy Scout and Brownie uniforms. Everyone had a great time showing off their favourite team.
