AMORE du TOIT

Welcome back all students and staff after a short but sweet spring break.

Even during spring break our great students showed academic excellence. Stettler Elementary School achieved outstanding results at the Central Alberta Regional Science Fair (CARSF) held at the Bower Place Mall in Red Deer on March 25 and 26.

Nine Grade 5 science fair projects from Stettler Elementary were entered to compete against the best 36 Grade 5 and 6 projects from across central Alberta.

Five out of the top six student projects were selected from Stettler Elementary. The awards these students received included the top place trophy, plaques, cash awards, certificates, and other special recognition awards.

Cassidy Dubber and Rachelle Vogel finished first with their project “Caffeine Jolt.” Their project investigated how caffeine affected people’s heart rates. These girls were awarded the first place trophy and a gold award certificate.

Racheal Deaver’s project of “The Heartbeat of Video Games” and Avery Marko and Caitlin Forseth’s project of “Super Tsunamis” tied for second place. Racheal was awarded with a plaque and a $100 cheque from Genome Alberta. She also received a gold award certificate. Her project studied if playing different types of video games would have an effect on human heart rate.

Avery and Caitlin were awarded a gold award certificate. Their project studied three factors that cause tsunamis to occur.

Riley Norman’s project of “Going Bananas” and James Switenky and Samuel Hamelin’s project of “The Amazing, Blazing Sticks” finished in the top 6 projects. Riley received a silver award certificate, and a $100 cheque from the Alberta Institute of Agrologists. James and Samuel were awarded a silver award certificate and $50 each from the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).

Abby Collard and Jacqueline Foley received the Rosalyn Cowan Memorial Award for their project on “Whose Tongue Is Cleaner?” Katanna Fillinger and Jaden Turner were awarded an Honorable Mention certificate for their project on “Water Power”. Ariel Blackmore and Madison Kuefler also received an Honorable Mention certificate for their project on “Polish Power.”

Brady Anderson and Clayton Smith were awarded safety goggles for their project on “Toothpaste Conundrum.”

The Grade 5 science staff who guided the students in their projects were Rob Howell, Bonnie Lynn, Sharon Fischer, and Stefan Olafson.

Rob Howell said “Our students’ results this year were the best of any school I have seen in the 12 years Stettler Elementary has entered CARSF.”

As staff, we commend our students for the outstanding results that they have achieved.

We are ready to enjoy our last school term before summer.
