SES students shine in Peace Hills X-Country Run.

STETTLER ELEMENTARY NEWS -- As a follow-up from last week's article, our Grade 6 students did indeed travel to Rocky Mountain House and had the good fortune to spend some time with a group of highly educated professionals at Des Crossley Demonstration Forest. Half of the students participated on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and the other half on the following day. The Grade 6 science classes were able to have a hands-on experience.

Then at the Peace Hills X-Country run on Saturday, Sept. 17, our students again made us proud with their effort and performance. It was a great day for our 36 cross-country runners who participated in the meet in Wetaskiwin. Our runners competed against 40 plus schools, and we have many success stories from the day.

In the grade 2-3 boys' group, Jordan Brittain ran an impressive 5:49 in the 1k to capture fifth and a new t-shirt. Also running in this division of 47 runners was Daniel Enyedy, Carter Erickson, Ben Aicken, Dalin Nixon, and Kade Strandquist. These boys helped their team to place third in team standings.

Kadence Fisher was first off the starting line and finished in a time of 5:53 in the 1k Grade 2-3 girls to capture the gold medal. Our Grade 2-3 girls captured the first place team award with outstanding runs from Megan Kirby, Jenna Fryer, Myriam Barrette, Kaylee Halverson and Hayden Wiebe. Well done!

In the Grade 4-5 boys' 2k run, Stefan Oprea won the silver in a close race. Teammates Hayden Baker, Phillipe Barrette, Colt Van Straten and Kade Coulthard helped the boys place second in team standings.

In the grade 4-5 girls 2k run, there were 84 runners. Our top runner was Amy Kirby and not far behind were Kristin Forseth, Kyra Halverson, Shanaea Arlidge and Taylor Gallard. Well done, ladies!

Onto the gruelling 3k grade 6-7 boys' race. Our two boys in Grade 6 competed against 74 athletes. Will Jackson had an excellent 14th place finish in 13:26.92 and Brandon Enedy had a personal best time of 17:52. Great job, gentlemen.

And finally our grade 6-7 girls who went out for their first hilly 3k and came across the finish line with the usual smiles and "I'm so proud of myself" attitude. We had 10 runners in this event. Kate Bradford finished 22 out of 74 runners with Jamie Dickson, Zoe Norman, Mackenzie Miller Gabby Oprea, Hannah Kneeland, Jenna Cook, Brianca Brugman, Lexi Stranquist and Kristine Miller not far behind.

These athletes will be running again this week as they travel to Camrose on Thursday, Sept. 22 to participate in the Viking cross-country run, so check back next week to read the results for this upcoming race.
