SES steps up to the plate

STETTLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- Thursday marked the first Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test of the spring.

STETTLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- Thursday marked the first Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test of the spring. Our Grade 6 students wrote Part A (Writing) of their Language Arts exam. The remainder of the exams will be written in June, but thus far our students have fared well. Students that have joined us from Fort McMurray were exempt from writing the test, but we did have one student choose to write it anyway. On that note, these students have settled in very well and have quickly made friends and have fit into the culture of the school, and we are thrilled to have been able to welcome you.

Stettler Elementary School is in the third year as a Leader in Me School and we are truly growing some incredible leaders. We had many students step forward with suggestions for how we could fundraise for the displaced families in our community. Not wanting to compete with each other, the school decided to simply set up a container for donations at that office and our student body did a great job donating money to this cause. As well, Mrs. Geddes' Grade 2 class organized "Freezie Friday for the Fort" and all classes had the opportunity to bring in donations for a freezer. This fundraiser alone raised over $1,100, and we look forward to being able to use that money to support some of the needs of the families who have joined us from the north. Thank you to all of the students, in our school, who have thought of ways that we could make things a bit easier for our new friends.

Another effort was made by 6EP to support the families affected by the horrific fires in Fort McMurray by participating in Big 105.5's Support the Fort Request-a-thon on Friday, May 6. During first class, Camille Barette phoned into the station and requested the class's theme song "I Lived" by OneRepublic. Considering they're in Grade 6, the class decided to donate $60 to the Red Cross for the song to be played.

We will have an opportunity to showcase our student leaders on Wednesday, May 18, as we host our first annual Leadership Day at the school. All parents and community members are invited to join us from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on that day. Our student leaders have been working hard to organize some activities for this day, and are looking forward to demonstrating how they live the 7 Habits on a daily basis. Leadership Day will begin in the gymnasium at 9:30 a.m., and will involve the touring of classrooms and the school as well. Following the Leadership Day our students have an extra long weekend as Thursday, May 19, is a PD Day for teachers and then Friday, May 20 is a day off in lieu of parent/teacher interviews. Regular classes will resume on Tuesday, May 25, as Monday is Victoria Day. We wish all families a safe and fun extended long weekend. Our hope is that each of you will be able to spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Also, a reminder that our kindergarten and playschool registrations are open, and parents are welcome to call or to come into the school to find our more about, or to register your child. You can contact the school at 403-742-2235 and we will help you with the process.
