Talented poets of Grade 6 are enjoying the poetry slam

STETTLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- Our classes and students have been busy setting goals, accomplishing goals, and having fun during this past week. Last Wednesday, our Grade 4 – 6 students completed their second round of skiing and snowboarding at Canyon Ski Hill. With lessons and extra practice, our students have become quite accomplished in mastering the hill.

Also last week, our Grade 6 EP class wrapped up their week by participating in a poetry slam. Their classroom was transformed into a quaint cafe, including pastries and hot chocolate. Each student had an opportunity to grab the mic and slam (reading, saying, competing) their poem, while their peers enjoyed the entertainment and snacks. It was a great success, full of sharing, laughter, and memorable performances. It is truly incredible to see what talented poets we have already in Grade 6.

In other Grade 6 news, our 6CR class has made the decision to donate all their recycling (Sept.- Jan.) proceeds to the secondary school band students to help offset some of the expenses of their trip to New Orleans. Congratulations to these students for thinking beyond their own classroom, and for their willingness to support this community fundraiser.

Our older students will also have an opportunity to participate in the new French Club that will be starting in February. We have a couple of teachers on staff who are fluent in the language and Mrs. McDonald has offered to share this skill with our Grade 5 and 6 students. Students who join this club will be exploring various parts of French culture and some beginner level French vocabulary and conversation. They will be meeting once per week, and we are looking forward to hearing the bilingual conversations from these students.

Our younger students have also been busy and having fun. As part of the Grade 2 study on Iqaluit, Nunavut, 2SG made animal hide tents and igloos to show the different houses that the Inuit people lived in during the early days. They also made a caribou out of clay and an Inukshuk to go with their houses to represent some important aspects to their way of life. As well, the 2DB class will be celebrating the achievement of their January reading goal on Thursday, Jan. 28, by holding a fancy dress party. The class will come to school in their best clothes, tables will be set with table cloths, and punch, cupcakes, and fruit will be served. There will be dancing, eating, and games to celebrate this goal and as a fun way to end the month of January.

Our Kindergarten students enjoyed a fun-filled Penguin Day on Jan. 22, and our play school students enjoyed "A Teddy Bear Picnic" on Monday and Tuesday this week. All of these were fun activities, and all this happened during a short week. Just a reminder that there will be no school for students on Friday, Jan. 29, as the teachers are involved in a Professional Development Day.
