Seniors’ centre busy on Friday

The Halkirk Seniors’ Centre was a busy place on Friday, June 11, when they hosted garage sale of treasures, a bake table and offered lunch.

A group from the Paintearth lodge also came out to the centre for coffee and to visit.

The Halkirk Hicks hosted their annual 4-H rodeo and achievement competition at the weekend at the Bull-a-rama grounds with a large crowd of well wishers present. Results to be published next week.

The Mother Teresa students in grades 4 to 9 attended an invitational track meet at Wainwright on June 1.

Congratulations to our students who placed so well. Max Schaffner placed first in high jump; Elliott Mabbott received a first in discus; Tiana Gamroth was awarded three first place awards in standing broad jump, running long jump and the 50-meter dash where she broke the track record. Liam Grice also received a first in shot-put and broke a record in his age category.

Grades one to six attended their track meet in Stettler on May 26. Several students placed well, but we don’t have a complete listing.

The school has three new Grade 1 students, Zoe Giffin, Megan Grice and Zack Shilling, are all ready for the fall classes. There is also several kindergarten kids and the parent/school group are organizing a pre-school class for 3- and 4-year- olds.

They are selling “mom’s pantry” products as a fund raiser and orders are needed by this Friday, June 18.

Local youngsters playing softball with a Gadsby team are Zack and Natalie Schilling, Devon and Toryn Johnson, Madeline and Makena Schauer and Bailey Musgrove.

Dale Kent spent a few days in Camrose for the Elks Provincial convention. He is going in as the District Deputy for our area which is district #11.

Sympathy to Barbie Kent and her son Brian on the passing of Barbie’s grandmother from Lloydminister.

Congrats to Tessa Mabbott who placed tenth in barrels at the Provincial High School final in Ponoka on June 13 and has been invited to compete at the Silver State International rodeo in Fallon, Nevada from July 4 to 9. Brittany Mabbott competed in the Intercollegiate finals in Edmonton way back in April and placed second in both barrels and pole bending. Very nice.

Jacquie Dietrich participated in the Seniors open golf tournament held earlier this month.

Peggy and Terry Vockeroth have cousins visiting from England. Mandy and Ian Carruthers are enjoying sites, touring the mine and attending the convocation of Samantha Vockeroth in Red Deer. On June 4, Samantha received her bachelor of education degree from the University of Alberta.

Dale Berry and his lady friend Carole Bumford from Saskatoon spent a week with his daughter Ellyn and Brent Schaffner and were able to attend Max’s confirmation at the United Church in Castor and Jillian’s concert in Stettler.
