2000 – 10 YEARS AGO

• Paving the roads to Stettler Airport and paving the runway was presented to Town of Stettler council by Stettler Airport Authority representative Trent Moor who spent $5,000 to repair his airplane’s propeller that was damaged by gravel on the runway that chipped his propeller that put the aircraft out of balance.

• A test of the Town of Stettler’s emergency alert system will be put the test later this summer with a siren that will alert people to tune in to their local radio or television station for more information and instructions.

1990 – 20 YEARS AGO

• Canadian Northern Society officially rededicated the Big Valley train station building in the Village of Big Valley and its railway heritage at a ceremony July 29. Built in 1912, the station is one of only a few of its type still in existence.

• John Brewster was named the old-timers fiddlers champion at the annual Stettler County Fair fiddlers’ competition presented on the grandstand stage. He was the only Stettler fiddler to capture a championship.

1980 – 30 YEARS AGO

• Stettler was the scene of the Alberta Mosquito Baseball Championships over the weekend with participating teams from Red Deer, Calgary, St. Albert, Slave Lake and host Stettler Rotary Blue Jays who finished second in the tournament.

• Heartland Jewelry and Gift in Stettler in Brennan Complex hosted its grand opening Aug. 8. Stock in the store has been selected to complement, not compete with, other businesses in town.

1970 – 40 YEARS AGO

• More than 8,000 people visited Rochon Sands Provincial Park over the civic holiday weekend to establish a record for the popular resort. The park is on the beauty spots of each central Alberta and the gentle slop of beach makes swimming especially suited to children.

• When Thoreau lay dying, a clergyman asked him, “Have you made peace with God?” He replied, “We have never quarreled.”

1960 – 50 YEARS AGO

• Carnation Milk Co has indicated that Stettler is being considered as a likely location for a major milk-evaporation plant, which would employ about 37 people. It would need about 100,000 pounds of milk per day all year round.

• “Never fear spoiling your children by making them too happy. Happiness is the atmosphere in which all good affections grow.” – Thomas Bray.

1950 – 60 YEARS AGO

• George King has outfitted his buildings and farmstead for the holding of regular auction sales of livestock, furniture and farm machinery. Sales will be held every Thursday afternoon with veteran auctioneer Harry Lynn in charge.

• Les Legg and C.L. Willis attended the annual seniors’ (golf?) tournament in Edmonton and Willis won a trophy. Both players also won $3 by entering a sports pool.

1940 – 70 YEARS AGO

• Heavy rain and hail storms swept across the area and left thousands of acres of pounded crops, three dead horses, and countless gardens ruined. Farms in the Leahurst area took the brunt of the storm as crops suffered 100 per cent damage.

• A group of boys is working at the (unnamed) school to make up the damage caused by breaking windows during the summer holidays. About $75 worth of damage was done during the night raids in July.

1930 – 80 YEARS AGO

• Forestburg Herald reports that Meeting Creek valley is to be investigated by a party of Pacific coast people interested in oil development. It is not at all unlikely that Meeting Creek will become as famous as Turner Valley.

• Miniature golf may be a new game, but the Gay Nineties were just as woozy over miniature tennis. They called it ping pong.

1920 – 90 YEARS AGO

• Friday night, Westwoods came down to play baseball against Gadsby and a fearful and wonderful game resulted. The visitors were much superior to the scratch bunch masquerading as Gadsby and we lost count of the score but it must have run into triple figures.

• Flashes from Foreman: The bathing resort on Battle River just north of here is a busy place with over 200 arriving on Sunday.

1910 – 100 YEARS AGO

• Dr. J. Frankum of Bishop’s College in Montreal arrived in town this week and will be associated with Dr. Donovan in the practice of medicine and surgery. They wish to announce that night calls and the country practice will be taken care of.

• August Asmussen robbed a hive of his bees from which he took 24 pounds of nice white honey. From this, it appears that bee raising in this area would be profitable.
