Sunday’s Family Games Day and Chili Supper sponsored by the Friends of the Big Valley Library had a great turn out despite the conflict with the Olympic hockey game and closing ceremonies. The Legion Hall was filled with kids of all ages enjoying an afternoon of board games while the adults either played games with the kids or visited with each other, often keeping up with the Hockey results by phone. A delicious selection of chili, cornbread and sweet treats rounded off the day, with everyone going home contented.

Some 14 players were out for crib at the Big Valley Inn on Feb. 28. At table one, 1st was Caroline Pound with Violet McCarty and Arlyne Hingst tying for 2nd and 3rd and Ernest Petrussa and Gladys Groat tying for the booby. Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions and the Canadian Northern Society are holding an open house at the Big Valley Heritage Railway Station on Saturday March 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring the new community meeting room facility recently developed in the former express room of the depot.

With the recent upgrade, the community now has an excellent alternative to hold business meetings within a historical setting, while the room will continue to be used for interpretive displays. New displays of railroadiana, art, and photography have been incorporated into the upgrades.

This open house will provide a great opportunity to take guided tours through the entire station, and learn more about Big Valley’s railway heritage and the continued preservation efforts of this splendid example of a Canadian Northern Railway “Standard Second Class” station – built in 1912.

Refreshments will be served by Don Gillespie and his Alberta Prairie Railway crew who have done a wonderful job in making this project happen. Everyone is invited for an afternoon of insight, fun and fellowship at the Big Valley Station.
