On Thursday, April 29, Stettler Elementary School students were fortunate enough to enjoy a performance called “When We Came West” – a pioneer drama performed by Millar College of the Bible. The play was a dramatic collection of homestead memories and the setting of this play was a little rural Alberta museum that was celebrating Alberta’s 100th birthday. The students at Stettler elementary always enjoy travelling to the PAC for a performance.

Kindergarten students were excited about a field trip to the local RCMP detachment. Each of the four classes had a tour, explored the jail cells, met with the staff, and were able to ask questions of the constables.

One of the highlights was being able to check out the back seats of the police cars. The children were excited to have the opportunity to check out the handcuffs. The students also received a treat bag with safety information, a pencil, and a bracelet. Thanks so much to the RCMP for taking time to share a bit about what you do with the children.

The Grade 4/5 Book Club wrapped up this school year with a special lunch activity which we poetically call “Grub With Club”. On Wednesday May 5, the Book Club Kids treated students in kindergarten, Grade 1, 2 and 3 to a read-aloud story with their lunch. The book club members selected books and worked in groups of two or three.

They practiced reading the book aloud, and even did voices, animal sounds, or acted out parts to bring the story alive. All the classroom audiences enjoyed the presentations; the book club kids enjoyed taking on this literacy leadership role. They also presented each classroom with a DVD copy of the same story to thank everyone for supporting our school-wide literacy activities this year.

For this event many of the book club students wore their hand-painted book club t-shirts. During the month of April students let their creativity flow as they designed and then used multiple mediums to decorate a unique t-shirt of their very own.

The Book Club has had another amazing year. Mrs. Sylvester, Ms. Watts, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Pinder have enjoyed working with this dedicated group of readers and leaders.
