Outdoorsmen yearn for spring

Submitted by Robert Greene

This has been sort of a blustery spring so far but we do go on about our business as usual.

On Feb. 5 we hosted our annual banquet dinner and awards night at the Stagecoach Saloon at the Stampede grounds. Even though it was a very stormy night we had upwards of 300 guests. Thanks to everyone for coming out on such a wintery night.

Last year was very busy as we had several projects on the go along with our normal functions of archery shoots, kid’s camp, trap and rifle shooting and the Rifleman’s Rodeo on Labor Day weekend.

Our membership has been increasing a little every year and last year was no different as we are over 400 members. Great to see more people taking an interest in what we stand for and the things we teach.

At Kid’s Camp we teach canoeing, trapshooting, rifle shooting, hunter education, gun safety and other outdoor skills to help our young people enjoy the outdoors in their future years. It is not too early to sign up for Kid’s Camp as it fills up pretty quick. Last year we had 28 kids at camp and they all had a great time and so did we. We asked them how they liked camp and they said it was kind of like going to school but a lot more fun.

We also teach firearm safety courses for anyone who wishes to own firearms and likes to hunt or take part in other shooting sports. Our next firearms course will be April 8 and 9. To register call Red 783-2256 or Beth 783-4608 as we are taking bookings.

Birdhouse building was March 19 at the clubhouse. There was no cost for this and we had a wiener roast for everyone when the houses were finished.

We have a casino coming up the last part of March that is a good fundraiser for the club. This will help out with club improvements and pay the everyday expenses also.

There has been so much snow this winter that my snow shovel has worn down about six inches. It’s hard to ice fish when there is so much white stuff on the lakes. Our vehicles are not tall enough.

Here’s looking forward to spring and seeing some dirt again.
