Oscar winning movie on tonight at the library

March is in like a lion and it marks the launch of the library’s Peeps Diorama Contest.

SPL NEWS

March is in like a lion and it marks the launch of the library’s Peeps Diorama Contest. We’ve got some great prizes lined up and we’re looking forward to your peeptacular entries. Make your diorama as simple or as elaborate as you would like, but it must have Peeps marshmallow rabbits and chicks as the main players in your scene. You can buy your own Peeps or pick up a box at the library. There are three age groupings for entries: 10 and under, 11 to 15, and 16 and over. The contest runs until Tuesday, March 31.

If you need some inspiration for your diorama or just want to finish it up, come to the library on Tuesday, March 10 at 4 p.m. for a Peeps Diorama workshop. Work on your prize-winning entry at the library. We’ll have peeps, boxes and craft supplies available. What you do with them is up to you. If you need any special props for your diorama, please bring them with you. We’ll display the dioramas until the end of March and announce the prize winners in each category in the following week.

Tonight, on Wednesday March 4, we’re showing “Whiplash” at the library. Watch J.K. Simmons (Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor) as the ruthless instructor of an aspiring jazz musician at 6:30 p.m. with popcorn. The movie is rated 14A.

Readers’ Circle Book Club is on Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. We’ll be discussing “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves” by Karen Joy Fowler with snacks. Next month’s book is “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls,” David Sedaris’s hilarious book of personal essays. It’ll be available at the library to take out any time.

Saturday, March 7 is gardening day at the library. At 10 a.m. join us for Garden Design with Beth from Echoglen Gardens; learn how to design the perfect edible, decorative or small space garden. Then from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Dustin Morton will take us on a field trip (weather permitting) teaching us how to prune and prep your garden for spring. If the weather is inclement Dustin will present in the library.

On March 12, we have a couple of programs, Spine Crackers Teen Book Club is discussing “City of Ember” and Chicks with Sticks offers the opportunity to catch up on or begin a new craft project. Join us.

Friday, March 13 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday March 14 from 10 am to 6 pm brings a hockey card weekend at the library. Come buy, sell, or trade your hockey cards.

The library is looking for any toys that are no longer needed or wanted for our toy hacking day where you can Make Your Own Mutant. Our toy hacking day is on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. This is your chance to be a mad scientist.

We’ve also settled on a date for our Bubbles & Bling party. Save the date on Saturday, April 18 for a fabulous time.
