A Stettler woman who operates a family day home has been announced as a finalist for a provincial award for service of excellence.

A Stettler woman who operates a family day home has been announced as a finalist for a provincial award for service of excellence.

Lorna Orlick of Stettler has been named as one of three finalists for the award instituted the Ministry of Children and Youth Services for approved family day homes as part of the 2010 Alberta Childcare Professional Awards of Excellence.

Nominees with the highest score in each of the categories will be recognized at an awards ceremony April 30 in Edmonton at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel.

“I am very happy to be nominated,” said Orlick who has operated Stettler Family Day Home for 13 years and licensed to serve six children.

For six categories, 45 professionals who care for children in Alberta’s licensed day care, pre-school, out-of-school care and approved family day home programs have been chosen as finalists.

“Childcare professionals do excellent work each and every day to ensure that children are safe and well-cared for, while their parents are working or going to school,” said Children and Youth Services Minister Yvonne Fritz.

“Awards of excellence acknowledge the commitment and determination the finalists have toward providing an enriching learning environment that meets each child’s abilities, interests and needs.”

Close to 100 nominations were received from across the province.

Representatives from Alberta’s childcare community evaluated each nomination using criteria that included: supporting child development, celebrating diversity, engaging parents and communities, and commitment to ongoing learning.
