Olympics staged at SES

It was an event of Olympic proportions - the highly anticipated Stettler Elementary School Olympic Games. Event organizers, Kim Poapst and Dawn Fryer of the HEART program, had been planning and training athletes in the weeks prior to the games. Events were held over two days in the elementary school gym.

The gym featured giant Olympic rings above the doors, and a giant Inukshuk greeted the athletes, along with the official winter games mascots.

Athletes paraded in wearing their team colors, and went to their respective athletes villages. The event began with a torch relay between the teachers of the participating classes, culminating in the cauldron being lit by Mr. McElroy signifying the start of the games.

Students participated in a variety of activities that replicated the sports from the winter Olympic Games. The teams began doing a torch relays. They they were able to participate in a skeleton race; followed by bobsleigh on scooters; floor hockey; bialthalon; and ski jumping.

Students watched an inspirational video of events of the actual Olympic games. One of the highlights of the day was when each student at Stettler Elementary School was awarded a stuffed animal mascot sponsored by Wonder Bread. These prizes were awarded to our school in recognition of all of the hours of physical activity that our school participates in. A rendition of O Canada by the students concluded the games.

It left the entire school feeling uplifted and excited about the Olympic Games; our country; and ourselves striving to reach our personal bests.

Teachers will be heading off to convention on March 4 and 5, and so there will be no school for students these days.
