Students and teachers at Stettler Elementary celebrated Canada Flag Day on Feb. 15 and 16 by having fun in the gym.

“Last year, we celebrated the Olympics,” said Kim Poapst, phys. ed. Teacher for grade 3, 4 and 5.

“It was very successful so we wanted to keep that spirit going with our groups”.

For each hour and half-period, four classes from the same grade participated in eight group activities.

“We had an over-under type thing that starts at the beginning from going to the Pacific to the Atlantic and back. We had dogsled races, and canoe races, and then we did beaver dam building and we had a triathlon,” said Poapst.

Kids also played lacrosse and basketball.

Teachers had their own activity when the kids were done with theirs.

They did an obstacle course in which they had to race in a canoe, drink hot chocolate through a Swizzler, eat a Timbit and have another canoe race back to their starting point, as students cheered them on.

“It’s fun and it’s a nice break from being in the classroom, and it’s just nice for the kids to have fun and to work together,” concluded Poapst.

At the end of the period, students watched the video of the song Believe by Suzie McNeil and sang the national anthem.

The school also took the occasion to celebrate the Canada Winter Games, which are taking place right now in Halifax, NS.
